51-ft statue of Shahu Maharaj proposed at memorial.



Pune firm Design Consultants Company won the first prize in the contest organized to select the best design for the Shahu memorial. The memorial will come in the city's Shahu mill premises.

KOLHAPUR: A towering 51-feet statue of Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj is planned at the Kotitirth lake in the mill premises for the proposed memorial. The design for the memorial in the Shahu mill is based on the theme of 'Kalapur (City of Arts)'.
The design was presented before the Rajarshi Shahu memorial advisory committee recently and received some suggestions from the members. The design with the additions will be presented before chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in a month, said officials.

The company also studied world famous monuments from USA and Europe before finalizing its design for the Shahu memorial. "We have suggested some educational activities at the memorial as the king was very keen on education," said Sarang Joshi of the firm.Guardian minister and chairman of the committee Harshvardhan Patil and eminent historian Jaysingrao Pawar suggested changes such as restructuring the proposed road length, gates and some others in the design.

 



"We have asked the company to make the necessary changes. The design, which was presented before the committee, will be revised and put before chief minister for final approval. Once the CM approves the

design, the detailed project report will be prepared. We may need two-three more meetings with the advisory committee before making the final design," said Gauri Chorge, the town planning expert of the KMC, who is handling the memorial project.

The design has also proposed separate public transport facility for the memorial and ample parking space. Patil suggested that the memorial should have battery-operated vehicles for the visitors.The state government had constituted a committee of 25 people comprising four ministers, senior officials, district administration heads and historians to develop the 27-acre land space of Shahu mill. KMC arranged a competition of architects for the memorial design. Shahu Maharaj had laid the foundation of industrial culture in the city by establishing the mill in 1906. The mill was officially closed on 31 August 2003.
